Cannabis contains 483 compounds, of those at least 80 are cannabinoids, the basis for medical and scientific cannabis use. This represents a problem for the research when it comes to isolating the effect of specific compounds, taking into account their interaction. Cannabinoids can serve as appetite stimulants, antiemetics, antispasmodics, and have some analgesic effects. There are six important cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant: cannabidiol, β-caryophyllene, tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabinol, cannabigerol, and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is an important component of medical cannabis. CBD accounts for up to 40 % of medical cannabis extracts. It has been shown that cannabidiol relieves seizure, inflammation, anxiety, cough, congestion and nausea and inhibits the growth of cancer cells. Recent studies have shown that cannabidiol is as effective as atypical antipsychotics in the treatment of schizophrenia. Because cannabidiol relieves the aforementioned symptoms, cannabis strains with a high amount of CBD can benefit people with multiple sclerosis, frequent attacks of anxiety and Tourette syndrome.
Part of the mechanism by which has been shown that medical cannabis reduces tissue inflammation, is through the β-caryophyllene compound. A cannabinoid receptor called CB2 plays a vital role in reducing inflammation in humans and other animals. It has been shown that β-caryophyllene is a selective activator of the CB2 receptor; β-caryophyllene is especially concentrated in essential cannabis oil, which contains approximately 12 – 35 % β-caryophyllene.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main compound responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis. The compound is mild analgesic, and cell research has shown that it has antioxidant activity. It is believed that THC interacts with parts of the brain, normally controlled by the endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter, anandamide. It is believed that anandamide plays a role in the sensations pain, memory and sleep.
Cannabinol (CBN) is a therapeutic cannabinoid found in cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. It is also produced as a metabolite or a degradation product of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBN acts as weak agonist of CB1 and CB2 receptors, with lower affinity compared to THC.
Like cannabidiol, cannabigol is not psychoactive. It has been shown that cannababirol relieves intraocular pressure, which may be beneficial in the treatment of glaucoma.
